Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focused on takedowns, ground fighting (grappling), and submission holds, emphasizing strategy and technique over strength.Do I need prior martial arts experience to start BJJ?
No experience is necessary! Our entry-level classes are beginner-friendly, and we strive to instruct each student in the way that resonates with them. What should I wear to my first class?
If you don’t have a gi (uniform), we will have one to lend you. If our supply is short, we recommend wearing athletic clothing without zippers or pockets, and try to avoid tank-tops as your shoulders will be rubbing on the mat.Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ?
Absolutely not. Though fitness never hurts in athletic endeavors, our kind of jiu-jitsu is unique in that it is uses practical strategies comprised of leverage, positioning, and timing; rather than just speed, strength, and agility.Do you offer gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu?
Yes! No-gi classes are yet to be formalized, but they will take place within our Infinite Games (advanced) program.
Membership & Classes
How much does it cost to train at your studio?
We have three main tiers of membership: 8, 12, or unlimited sessions a month for $160, $200, and $220 a month; respectively. With any of these memberships, we have family discounts of 15% and 30% for 2nd and 3rd(+) family members, and run special promotions from time-to-time. If you’re curious about what specials might be currently available, just ask!
Lastly, for those who’d like the cost-effectiveness of monthly membership, but have schedules too sporadic to justify monthly recurring dues, we also offer a 10-class Punch Pass option for $250—one payment, drop in any time, top-up when you want.
Do you offer a free trial class?
Yes! We also offer an additional 10-day trial, including a free uniform! If you’re interested, check out our “Trial” page. What demographics do you teach?
We offer classes for kids, teens, and adults of all skill levels. We will also offer a women’s only class soon. Can I watch a class before joining?
Absolutely! Feel free to visit and observe a class to see if our school is a good fit for you.
Safety & Etiquette
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?
Yes, when practiced correctly under proper supervision. Safety is our top priority, and we take every precaution to prevent injuries. What constitutes proper etiquette?
Please refer to our house rules below.
Do I need special gear to start?
A jiu-jitsu gi, belt, and a shirt or rashguard underneath the gi-top are required. If you do not already have a gi & belt, we will have uniforms to lend you on your initial class, and for up to 10 days in our 10-day free trial, which becomes yours (for free!) if you choose to sign up for one of our memberships. How do belt promotions work?
Promotions are based on attendance, skill acquisition/development, and instructor evaluation. Individual stripes—signifying experience within belt-ranks—are given at the end of class to those who’ve earned them, and belt promotions are given twice annually at our belt ceremonies. What should I do if I feel nervous about starting?
That’s completely normal! We’ve taken a shine to the saying “courage feels like fear when you’re doing the thing.” Just come do the thing with us one time and we’re certain you’ll feel how fun, accessible, and empowering that courage can be.
GROUNDED GRIT JIU-JITSU STUDIO
HOUSE RULES
At Grounded Grit Jiu-Jitsu Studio, we abide by an egalitarian, “we take care of each other” ethos. As such, we respectfully ask that each member observes the following house rules:
Safety--both our own and our partner's--is everyone's responsibility. Be aware and considerate of your training intensity at all times.
Consent is paramount; if either training partner feels uncomfortable participating in a technique or partner-pairing at any time, inform the instructor(s) and accommodations will be made.
To allow time for a smooth start, please arrive 10-15 minutes before each class.
Please remember to keep shoes off of the mat, but be sure to wear footwear in the restroom/changing areas.
For safety, no watches or jewelry are allowed while training.
Nails should be kept trimmed, long hair should be tied back, and a shirt or rashguard should be worn underneath the gi-top.
No training is allowed with open cuts/wounds. Please report any skin conditions to the instructor(s).
Gis must be washed between every training session, and damaged or otherwise un-cleanable gis must be replaced.
Report all injuries to the instructor(s) as soon as they occur.
If feeling physically unwell, avoid training until a few days after symptoms disappear. If the goal is to become better at rolling with the punches of life, this is a case where resting IS training.
Keep all language respectful and family-friendly.
Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
While class is in session, please keep noise levels to a minimum and refrain from loud cell-phone usage.
